Benedetto's father Hildebrand was Roman of German ancestry.[1] Benedetto was born in the Sub Capitolio region of Rome, the Forum Romanum.[1][2]
He was cardinal deacon at the Church of Saint Theodore in Rome.[1] He was elected as pope in December 972 but not consecrated until 19 January 973.[3][1]
Benedict the Sixth, a Roman, succeeded John in his office and in his troubles, for being taken prisoner by Bonifazio, a potent citizen, he was put into Castle St Angelo, a jail for malefactors, or rather for innocent persons, where in a little while he was strangled, or (as Cusentinus says) famished. ... He died when he had been Pope one year and six months.
In June 974 Benedict VI was imprisoned in the Castel Sant'Angelo and the antipope Boniface VII took control. Benedict VI was strangled to death while in prison by a priest named Stephen. Boniface is not recognised by the Church as successor of Benedict VI.[1]
